چکیده

Achieving dependability in large scale infrastructure systems always requires making intelligent tradeoffs. This paper proposes QAPSL, a systematic approach to making such tradeoffs with regards to application state management. We identify Quality, Availability, Performance, Security, and Lifetime as a set of fundamental state properties that can be traded against each other. We then describe a practical approach to making the tradeoffs, and apply QAPSL to the design of a simplified corporate content distribution network. Although our qualitative discussion is aimed primarily at large scale systems, we believe it is applicable to most systems that manage significant amounts of state.
